The Feed Made You

A randomised study in Nature moved 4,965 people's beliefs by reordering their feeds. Switching the algorithm off did not switch the people back.

Kittler's harshest sentence was the opening of Gramophone, Film, Typewriter: media determine our situation. For decades you could treat that as a provocation, the kind of claim a discipline keeps around to argue with. Now it has a control group.

The study, published in Nature: 4,965 users, seven weeks, randomised assignment. One arm received X's algorithmic feed, the other a chronological one. The algorithmic arm shifted measurably toward the political positions the ranking favoured. The chronological arm held steady. Same platform, same posts in the world, different ordering machine. The ordering machine moved the beliefs.

The finding that should keep media theorists up at night is the persistence. When the researchers turned the algorithm off, the shift stayed. The feed had produced subjects who went looking for that content on their own. The constitution outlasted the constituting machine.

Inscription systems produce readers

This has happened before, at slower speeds. When Augustine watched Ambrose read without moving his lips, he recorded the moment as a marvel: silent reading was new, and it was manufacturing a new interior life. The codex made a reader who could hold a private argument with a text, and that reader then built institutions, confessions, novels. Nobody could randomise fourth-century Milan, so the claim stayed philosophy for sixteen centuries.

The feed compressed the codex's timeline from centuries to seven weeks, which is what finally made the loop measurable. That compression is the epistemically interesting part. Co-constitution was always running; it simply ran slower than any instrument built to observe it. Now the loop completes inside a grant cycle, and philosophy of technology gets its first laboratory result.

We create feeds and then they create us, and the creation outlasts the feed. Persistence is the detail to carry with you: whatever your ranking machine has been building in you this year does not uninstall with the app.
